Scott Sutherland introduced today's speaker, Jim Moloney, author and local historian. Jim Moloney and Murphy Givens recently co-edited a book called Recollections of Other Days. The book is a compilation of memoirs from early settlers of Corpus Christi and the Nueces Valley of South Texas. The great value of their accounts, both written and oral, lies in the fact that they lived through the times they recalled from 1850-1930. From the time when Corpus Christi was a struggling frontier outpost in the 1850s through the time of the Civil War and beyond, Mr. Moloney shared some of the stories of the early settlers and the hard times they endured. Their legacy is the Texas we know today. Their stories are part of our history and a part of ourselves. Mr. Moloney concluded by encouraging us to interview older adults in our community so that future generations can learn from their life experiences. Many of the stories found in Recollections of Other Days are available today because Mary Bluntzer took the time to interview others and preserved her findings with the help of the Corpus Christi Public Library. Please consider continuing this practice of preserving our stories for future generations to enjoy.
And same day, we'll start bright and early at 7:00 am, setting out the flags for Veterans' Day. This is allways a fun project in conjunction with the Boy Scouts. Mark your calendars!
