This Beautiful logo was drawn for us by Joe McInnis.
Joe was a member of Southside Rotary many years ago.
He was in a wheelchair and had almost no use of his arms or hands.
He drew the boat with his mouth and teeth.

Two years ago, U.S. Rotary members in Maine set out to improve the education system in Bikaner, Rajasthan, an Indian city near the border of Pakistan. The Rotary Club of Kennebunk Portside chose Bikaner because club member Rohit Mehta was originally from the area and had connections there. Mehta put the club in contact with Rotarians in India to provide desks for four government-run schools. But when community leaders returned with a request for more desks, the Maine Rotarians decided they had to think bigger. The Rotary Foundation had rolled out its new grant model, which required that the...

Enjoying calm winds and peaceful Pacific waters, Seung Jin Kim dove off his 43-foot sailboat, the Arapani, to swim with some dolphins nearby. The serenity that day near the equator was a stark contrast to the 60 mph winds and 23-foot waves he had to fight around Cape Horn, the southern tip of South America. But Kim, a veteran sailor and member of the Rotary Club of Seokmun, in Chungcheongnam, Korea, expected such challenges when he set out in mid-October on a 25,600-mile journey around the world. In addition to fulfilling a lifelong dream, Kim is using the trip to raise awareness and funds...

After the first cases of Ebola reached Liberia's capital, Monrovia, last June, local Rotary members feared that the city's limited health care system wouldn't be able to contain the highly infectious, often-deadly disease. Those fears were realized when infections quickly multiplied, underscoring the speed with which Ebola can spread in an urban center. It was the first time the hemorrhagic fever had threatened a major city since it erupted in West Africa last March. Now, after months of crisis-level response, and with the number of new cases declining, club members are looking to the long...

Despite his longstanding interest in polio eradication, polio was not on Joe Pratt's mind as he prepared for a mid-April 2012 climb of Mount Everest, the highest mountain on earth. But that changed in late 2011, when the resident of Nottingham, New Hampshire, USA, participated in a polio immunization project in Pakistan with fellow Rotary member Steve Puderbaugh. Moved by the efforts of the Pakistanis to battle the crippling disease, and by the vulnerability of the young victims, Pratt reset the focus of his climbing adventure. Pakistan is one of three countries where polio has never been...

Members of the Rotary Club of San Francisco Evening meet at a wine bar after work, share a social outing, and promote all their activities on social media like Meetup and Facebook. As the first evening club in the city, it has attracted many young professionals from Silicon Valley tech firms whose work schedules keep them from joining a more traditional club that meets for breakfast or lunch. But more than that, the evening format has helped the club grow by 30 percent since it received its charter in mid-2013. Danielle Lallement, who was its charter president, says the club has been...

[Rotary Club Invocation:

Thank you for agreeing to say the invocation for our Rotary Meeting.  The Rotary Club of
Southside Corpus Christi includes persons of many different religions, beliefs and ideals,
and we aim to respect the  religious beliefs of others, while remaining faithful to our own.
Please make your invocation a non-denominational,  inclusive one that recognizes these
religious diversities and avoid references pertinent only to a particular set of religious  beliefs.

Thank you for your cooperation and participation.]

SHERIFF JIM KAELIN - "DID YOU KNOW?"
(Pictured below - Sheriff Jim Kaelin, courtesy: Gary Blum, DDS, MS)

We are pretty proud of our annual Buccaneer Days Festival
and Illuminated Night parade.  For over 39-Years, we have
had this gala weekend event celebrating pirates taking over
our city, and having the Mayor walk the plank.  Yes, it is a
pretty big weekend for our city.

Well, other cities in the U.S. have some pretty  big weekend
celebrations too.

Did you know in Wayne, Nebraska, on the second Saturday of
July, they have a crowing contest for roosters, plus a free omelet
feed for the people, and to top it all off, a chicken-flying meet,

which is now, hold on..., is a fully sanctioned event by the International Chicken Flying Association.

I'm just happy it takes place in July... and does not compete with Corpus Christi and oru pirate invasion celebration.

Introduced by Vice President, David Walker, the speakers of the day were "Unsung Heroes",
Annika Gunning and Jessica Alford.

The effects of Ms. Annika Gunning's planning and contracting
efforts over the past eight months extend far beyond this department
and City Hall, and will benefit city and county communities for years
to come.  Annika has expertly managed and continues to lead the very
successful development of the city's Comprehensive Plan (Plan CC)
and the Downtown Area Plan that will guide the city for the next 20 years.

She took on the seemingly impossible challenge of updating the city's
comprehensive plan that was completed in 1985.  A true professional,
Annika has displayed the ability to work with a diverse array of interest
groups, committees, and citizens given numerous briefs, attending public
open house meetings and workshops, many after working hours, to develop
a very challenging and complex comprehensive plan.   She personally reviews
every zoning case and many times present the case to the Planning Commission
and or the City Council.  Her research on complex zoning cases is methodical,
always providing sound planning recommendations and code interpretation.
Able to see the big pictures, she has exhibited excellence in management skills,

handling difficult project and zoning issues by working through solutions with her staff, developers and engineers.
As a result of her personal actions, she has made an ever lasting impact for the City and is strongly recommended
for this award.

Anikka stated that was surprised to have been selected for the award, "It is quite and honor".

The second Unsung Hero, Jessica Alford professionally works with
and has earned the respect of developers, consultants, owners and
government agencies and the public in the management of commercial
projects from the beginning through the process of issuing a building
permit. She exemplifies excellent project management qualities, work
ethic, technical knowledge, professionalism and the willingness to always
look for the best solutions fo the customer during the construction process
She has successfully managed nearly 100 projects through the Development
Services process by organizing early assistance meetings, coordinating
inspections, trouble-shooting problems, and ultimately ensuring customer
projects receive a certificate of Occupancy.  In addition, she has worked on
several zoning cases and presented them to the Planning Commission.  With
the increase of the department's presence in the public, she volunteered to
manage the department's media program, coordinating media interview for the
department and acting as the Public Information Officer for media requests.

She received high praise from Mr. Geoff Simpson, the owner of Kaplan Acquisitions, to the Mayor for their outstanding experience
they received from Development Service and specifically from Ms. Alford on the 324 unit apartment complex they submitted and
are developing.  She works seamlessly in the background handling numerous issues tso Development services can efficiently operate.
Ms. Alford is a dedicated employee and genuine team-player committed to customer service, the betterment of the City and is strongly
recommended for this award.

Alford remarked that she is, "humbled and honored" to have been selected for the Unsong Heroes award.

Utilities for the City of Corpus Christi; Wes Pearson, Assistant City Manager and Dan Grimsbo, Director of Development
Services at the City of Corpus Christi.

Vleck, who supervises over 600 employees was thankful to The Rotary club for recognizing his employees with the Unsung
Heroes Award.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

An important message from President John Owen

"Southside Rotary's goal for giving to RI Annual Fund year is $11,500. Currently
we are short of our goal of $773.  At the beginning of this year, I encouraged every
member to give something to the Annual Fund - It doesn't matter what you give as
long as you give.  We now have 40 members (or two-thirds of our club) who have
given this year, which is fantastic.  For those of you who have not given so far, I want
to ask you to give.  You can use the attached forms to give directly to RI, or you can
write a check and give it to Erasmo, who will make sure your contribution is credited
to your account at RI.  In any event, we are so close to making the goal; let's see if we
can achieve it.  Please consider donating today!!

To make a donation, please go to the District Website here, or get in touch with Erasmo Nava.
