A SPECIAL INVOCATION - BY Dr. GARY BLUM

On 27 January 1945, the advancing Red Army
entered the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination
camp complex, liberating more than 7,000 remaining
prisoners, who were, for the most part, ill or dying.
Days earlier, the SS had forced nearly 60,000 prisoners
to evacuate the camp and embark on the infamous "Death
Marches' in which many thousands lost their lives.

2015 marks the 70th anniversary of this liberation.
"How does one mourn six million people who have died? How many
candles does on light? How many prayers does one recite? Do we
know how to remember the victims in their solitude, their helplessness?
They left us without a trace, and we are their trace."
Elie Wiesel
We can honor the memory of those who were killed by ensuring that
history does not repeat itself, remembering that hateful anti-Semitism is alive ad well today as evidenced
by recent events in France.

In the Jewish tradition we light a candle in
memory of the departed. In that vein I shall
light a candle in the memory of Six Million
Jewish souls who perished in the Holocaust
in addition to millions of Roma, gay, lesbians,
political prisoners and others deemed undesirable
by the Nazis and their collaborators.
Let us pray and act together to eliminate anti-
Semitism and hatred from this world and work to
endeavor that all shall live together in peace and
harmony, beating "swords into plowshares" for the
benefit of mankind. Amen.
