For Nigerian philanthropist Michael Olawale-Cole, understanding Rotary's positive influence in the world requires imagining the world without Rotary. "How many millions of people's lives would not have been affected by Rotary's good work?" says Olawale-Cole, who joined Rotary as a member of the Rotary Club of Isolo, Lagos State, in 1980. "If Rotary did not take on the challenge of eradicating polio, how many more millions of children around the world would have died or been crippled by this disease? Who could have done that if not Rotary?" Imagining what the world would be like without Rotary...

According to a 2012 report by UNICEF and the World Health Organization, Ghana has made great strides in providing its people with clean drinking water. But access to better sanitation has lagged. Only about 14 percent of Ghanaians have access to improved facilities, compared with the 54 percent target set for 2015 by the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. Addressing the issue isn't simple, as pit latrines need emptying, toilets need maintenance, and promoting hygiene requires education. The H2O Collaboration, a partnership between Rotary and the U.S. Agency for International...

In the Esmeraldas Province of Ecuador, Rotary members have teamed up with a microfinance organization to provide small loans to poor women, teaching them to sew and bake so they can start or expand businesses. The Rotary Club of Marin Evening, in California, USA, reached out to 64 Rotary clubs in seven districts including Ecuador's, to raise money, find support from partners, and mobilize local community members for a global grant project. Keith Axtell, a member of the Marin Evening club, says the effort began in 2005-06, when his wife, Holly, was district governor and was looking for an...

70 feet Cement Arrows

All over the country, 70-feet concrete arrows can
be found in remote locations.  Follow them, and
they will point you out of the dessert.

They come courtesy of the U.S. Postal Service's
Air Force and will point you all the way across the
Continental United States.

They were constructed in 1924 to guide postal
planes in the right direction as they carried mail from
coast to coast.

(Below: *This is a pretty cool piece of history, even if it was
short-lived.  To think of those early postal pilots
navigating like this from coast to coast is mind-blowing.

These old planes could not rely on radio as much at the
time, so they used these arrows, along with beacon towers
to navigate.

(Below: *The towers were 50 feet tall and fixed with gas lights
that could be seen from 10 miles away, in order to help
lost pilots find their way.

The arrows and beacons bisect the United
States from San Francisco to New York City.

This is a model of the arrows and towers in their heyday.

World War II brought about new advances in technology
that effectively made the towers and arrows system
obsolete.

The towers were mostly dismantled.

Carrie Rice introduced this week's speaker, Captain
Joel Ponton, of the Corpus Christi Fire Department.

According to Ponton, working for the Fire Department is the best job in the world.  While
very physical, "You get paid to save lives and help people," he said.  He further added,
"If you have a thin skin, its not the job for you."

Ponton stated that he had set out to try and join the Navy, a friend of his was applying to
the Fire Department and so he decided to apply too.   He got the job, but his friend did not.

Ponton said that fire-fighters, whose gear can weigh up to 10 lbs, when fully out-fitted, do
everything from fire rescue to responding to car crashes.  The most calls they receive in a
day is from the EMS, who easily make up to 24 calls in 24 hours.  He clarified that only 50%
of such calls are typically life threatening.

The number one cause of fires, according to Ponton, is homeless individuals trying to keep
warm.  Right behind that would be individuals in their homes "plugging things where they
shouldn't".

In response to the question, "Are the the police and fire fighters prepared to avoid conflicts
between the community and the police as seen recently in Ferguson and Baltimore," Captain
Ponton said, the police and fire-fighters in Corpus Christi are very close to the community.
They are there to help them, and the community knows this.  He said he does not anticipate
that Corpus Christi will ever have such a problem; he added however that the do have training
programs in place to help them deal with such situations should they arise.

The following is a letter from Carolina to the
Southside Rotary club members.

Southside CC Rotary: From the moment I heard about Rotary International,
what they do, and the things they strive for - I knew I wanted to join, and that
it was perfect for me. As a college student, I joined Rotaract Club at TAMUCC.
From there on, I learned about all of the possible opportunities Rotary offers,
and the great people involved.  I was fortunate enough to be sponsored by South
Side Rotary Club to go to Costa Rica and give back to the underprivileged.

This experience, along with all of the other ones I was apart of with Rotary, have
allowed me to expand my devotion of helping others. I am blessed to have been
able to be a part of this, and greatly honored to have been able to represent such
a prestigious organization on my graduation day.   Again, I thank you all for the
continuous support, endless advice and opportunities.

From Carolina Quintanilla
