Joe was a member of Southside Rotary many years ago.
He was in a wheelchair and had almost no use of his arms or hands.
He drew the boat with his mouth and teeth.

The impact of an HIV/AIDS vocational training project in Liberia can be assessed by the ultimate measure: life itself. “There are children of HIV mothers living today who would not have seen their first birthdays [without the training],” says Elizabeth Mulbah, a member of the Rotary Club of Sinkor, Montserrado County, Monrovia, who delivered a lecture for health care providers about HIV/AIDS during the vocational training team’s five-day workshop in 2012. The goal of the team -- comprised of individuals from the Los Altos Rotary AIDS Project in California, USA; the Rotary Club of Sinkor; St....

From the December 2015 issue of The Rotarian On a clear spring day at the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor, the sky is azure, cherry blossoms and lilacs are exploding across the green landscape, and the majestic Doric columns of Angell Hall glow golden in the sunlight. This is the place that gave serial entrepreneur John W. Barfield his start. But Barfield, 88, is not an alumnus. He didn’t have the opportunity to go to college, or even to finish high school. He grew up in a family of sharecroppers in the segregated South. In search of a better life, his family migrated north to...

Thank you for agreeing to say the invocation for our Rotary Meeting.  The Rotary Club of
Southside Corpus Christi includes persons of many different religions, beliefs and ideals,

Please make your invocation a non-denominational,  inclusive one that recognizes these
religious diversities and avoid references pertinent only to a particular set of religious  beliefs.

(Pictured below: Dr. Jacob Moore, ophthalmologist
and special guest at South Side CC Rotary club meeting)

Introduced by Dr. Clem Struve, the week's special guest
was Dr. Jacob Moore.  Dr. Moore is an ophthalmologist
specializing in cataract, laser and implant surgery.

Dr. Moore shared a new technology in the treatment of end
-stage macular degeneration,  which involves implanting a
miniature telescope in the eye.

The implantable miniature telescope has been under develop-
ment since 2000, according to Dr. Moore.  He also said that
it got its first approval from the FDA in 2010; and in 2013,
Medicare started approving payments for the procedure.

Dr. Moore  also talked about conditions which could lead to
blindness; how to recognize these  conditions as well as how
to prevent and treat them.  The four conditions he identified
are cataracts, glaucoma, diabetes and macular degeneration.
