In describing her background, Klein said that she was born in Moscow,
Russia, where her parents, who were both scientists were not allowed
to get jobs in their professional fields because of their religious beliefs.
Klein's parents decided to migrate to the United States with the family.
Klein who was 14-years old, at the time, stayed home for six months,
to take care of her younger brother while both of her parents secured
jobs.

Klein said that first experiences usually decide what you will become in
life. For her, that significant experience was witnessing her father's best
friend, who was a physician, get arrested and sent to a work camp because
he was caught in church. Klein said, his family never got to see him again.
This experience aroused her interest in the judicial system, and against her
parent's wishes, she decided to pursue a career in Law.
Judge Klein stated that she never applied for the position of Municipal Court
Judge, because she did not think she was qualified, her best friend made the
application for her, and she was called for an interview. "Some how the city
council decided I was their first runner-up and appointed me as the Judge"
she said jokingly.
In her position, Klein is responsible for all juvenile cases that fall into her
jurisdiction. She said she was a prosecutor for 10-years, and all she knew
about juvenile cases was, "I didn't want to touch them".
She described her two and half years as the Judge of the Municipal Court
as an eye-opening experience. According to Klein, her responsibility to the
juvenile whose cases she works on, is to prevent them from getting into
further trouble. A role she described as emotionally stressful, but mostly
rewarding.
