Debbie High introduced our Program: Charlene Thomas, a Realtor on Padre Island , and Program Director at Glenoak Therapeutic Riding Center
Glenoak Therapeutic Center is a non-profit organization which provides equine assisted therapy and rehabilitation for children and adults with physical, mental, emotional and learning disabilities, by challenging them to achieve their maximum potential and rewarding them for their efforts. The Center is located in Flour Bluff on 50 Acres, some owned by the Center, some leased from the Naval Base. for horse grazing. the Center was started in 2003.
The horses are donated to the program. The horses must have a special aptitude. They must be able to listen to a minimum of 5 people. The center only accepts one out of 10 of the horses that are offered. Presently 85 students are served by the center with the help of 18 volunteers.
The center has Wheelchair ramps to allow the students in wheelchair to mount the horses. There are some restrictions, including weight and height. Many of the sstudents have limited movements of their arms, legs,etc... and must be trained to ride a horse. Class size is 6 students. Two volunteers are needed for each horse. Riders must wear helmets, which is hard at the beginning for some of them.
There is a waiting list for the students. Funds are received by agencies. In Texas 75% of the students are autistic.
The center also hasdonkeys, pigs, and blind horses.
Volunteers are needed. They don't need any special skills, nor to know how to ride.
Yoou can visit at any time.
President Suzanne, presented a "Tax Shelter" to Charlene to thank her for coming.
