Joe was a member of Southside Rotary many years ago.
He was in a wheelchair and had almost no use of his arms or hands.
He drew the boat with his mouth and teeth.

When Mariana Day moved in 1989 to the small beach town of Chacala, in Nayarit, Mexico, she noticed that the surrounding rural areas struggled to maintain schools. And most children weren’t able to go beyond an eighth-grade education. Day, who is a member of the Rotary Club of Bahía de Jaltemba-La Peñita, in Nayarit, had started a local scholarship program before she joined Rotary. Called Changing Lives, the program provided students with high school tuition, uniforms, school supplies, and transportation. In addition, Rotary clubs from the United States and Mexico have been investing in the...

From the September 2015 issue of The Rotarian Eradicating polio is a complex job. Since 1988, we’ve collaborated with the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and UNICEF to tackle the disease through our Global Polio Eradication Initiative. Here’s how our roles break down. The Strategist: WHO The World Health Organization (WHO) coordinates the management and administration of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative and provides technical and operational support to ministries of health in countries around the world. Today marks one year since Nigeria last reported a polio case caused by wild poliovirus, putting the country on the brink of eradicating the paralyzing disease. The last case was reported on 24 July 2014 in the northern state of Kano. If no cases are reported in the coming weeks, the World Health Organization is expected to remove Nigeria from the list of countries where polio is endemic, leaving just two: Afghanistan and Pakistan. Nigeria is the last polio-endemic country in Africa. The continent is poised to reach its own first full year without any illness from the virus on 11 August. “...

Once again, our club has pledged $500 to the Hands to Honduras
Project which is sponsored by the Port Isabel Rotary Club.  This
project has spanned 15-years and has resulted in the building of
classrooms in villages around Trujillo Honduras.

This year, our club has also pledged $1,500 to the Nepal Rabbit Farming Project
sponsored by the Kingsville noon club, Kingsville sunrise club and Rotary club of
Burnet.  In April, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake that killed 9,000 people, injured
23,000, and left hundreds of thousands homeless, affected Nepal.  This project
is self-sustaining and designed to help meet nutritional needs of the people and
generate income for local farmers.

Meeting Program

(Pictured below: ADG Leo Barrera)
Introduced by ADG Leo Barrera,  the week's speaker was
District Governor, Betty Frantum.

DG Betty Frantum who was originally a member of Southside
Corpus Christi Rotary club, presented PP John Owens with a
banner that had the club's message for the year, "Be a gift to
the world", the banner also included her autograph.

According to Frantum, "Each club has gifts that they give to the
community; and each club has individuals who create the
personality of the club by their individual gifts."

The District Governor engaged the club in an interactive
session by asking a few of the members to describe the
gifts that they bring to the club.  She also told the club
about the gifts that she brings, such as her participation
in the Ramp Champs events, the scarves that she made
to support the "End Polio Now" mission of RI foundation.

She also joked about offering her staff a day when they
could expect that she would be away from work, while
she attended the Rotary club meetings on Wednesday,
which she said, was a gift that she gave to her staff.
Today, she says her gifts include her commitment to her
role as District Governor.

ask  more people to join the club.  "The more
people we have involved in this, the more we can
do around the world an in our communities," she
said.  She closed her presentation by saying that
the District is aware and thankful for all the sacrifices
the club members make; and that the District is here
to support each member.
