Two years ago, U.S. Rotary members in Maine set out to improve the education system in Bikaner, Rajasthan, an Indian city near the border of Pakistan. The Rotary Club of Kennebunk Portside chose Bikaner because club member Rohit Mehta was originally from the area and had connections there. Mehta put the club in contact with Rotarians in India to provide desks for four government-run schools. But when community leaders returned with a request for more desks, the Maine Rotarians decided they had to think bigger. The Rotary Foundation had rolled out its new grant model, which required that the...

Enjoying calm winds and peaceful Pacific waters, Seung Jin Kim dove off his 43-foot sailboat, the Arapani, to swim with some dolphins nearby. The serenity that day near the equator was a stark contrast to the 60 mph winds and 23-foot waves he had to fight around Cape Horn, the southern tip of South America. But Kim, a veteran sailor and member of the Rotary Club of Seokmun, in Chungcheongnam, Korea, expected such challenges when he set out in mid-October on a 25,600-mile journey around the world. In addition to fulfilling a lifelong dream, Kim is using the trip to raise awareness and funds...

After the first cases of Ebola reached Liberia's capital, Monrovia, last June, local Rotary members feared that the city's limited health care system wouldn't be able to contain the highly infectious, often-deadly disease. Those fears were realized when infections quickly multiplied, underscoring the speed with which Ebola can spread in an urban center. It was the first time the hemorrhagic fever had threatened a major city since it erupted in West Africa last March. Now, after months of crisis-level response, and with the number of new cases declining, club members are looking to the long...

Despite his longstanding interest in polio eradication, polio was not on Joe Pratt's mind as he prepared for a mid-April 2012 climb of Mount Everest, the highest mountain on earth. But that changed in late 2011, when the resident of Nottingham, New Hampshire, USA, participated in a polio immunization project in Pakistan with fellow Rotary member Steve Puderbaugh. Moved by the efforts of the Pakistanis to battle the crippling disease, and by the vulnerability of the young victims, Pratt reset the focus of his climbing adventure. Pakistan is one of three countries where polio has never been...

Members of the Rotary Club of San Francisco Evening meet at a wine bar after work, share a social outing, and promote all their activities on social media like Meetup and Facebook. As the first evening club in the city, it has attracted many young professionals from Silicon Valley tech firms whose work schedules keep them from joining a more traditional club that meets for breakfast or lunch. But more than that, the evening format has helped the club grow by 30 percent since it received its charter in mid-2013. Danielle Lallement, who was its charter president, says the club has been...

SHERIFF JIM KAELIN - "DID YOU KNOW?"
(Pictured below - Sheriff Jim Kaelin, courtesy: Gary Blum, DDS, MS)

Language is how we communicate with each other.
language is how we express our thougths and
emotions, but just how many words are contained
in our languages?

*English has nearly 1 million words.

*German has about 185 thousand words.

*French has less than 100 thousand words.

As an American we sure have the upper hand when it comes to expressing ourselves on our
various national issues.

So with that said, did you know we also have more four letter words to help us express our
anger and frustrations without repeating ourselves?

This week's classification talk was given by Kayla Stovall.

(Pictured below, Kayla Stovall.  Picture Courtesy
Gary Blum, DDS, MS)

Kayla Stovall is the treasurer for the Rotaract club of Texas A&M University,
Corpus Christi (TAMUCC), and also the recipient of District 5930's International
Scholarship to Costa Rica.  Kayla was sponsored by the Southside CC Rotary Club.

Kayla said she was introduced to the Rotary club through the RYLA camp, which
she had attended in high school, and has since been involved in Rotary activities.
She moved from Dallas to attend school at TAMUCC, and quickly joined the
Rotaract Club, where she became the club's treasurer, and the current VP nominee.

According to Kayla, the scholarship will allow here to participate in a fourteen day
program as a volunteer member of a Global Health Team, coordinated by the
International Service Learning (ISL) in Costa Rica.

As a volunteer, Kayla will be part of a health team that responds to the medical needs
of community members who have been identified and referred for assistance by ISL.
Kayla will work with other volunteers under the strict supervision of licensed medical
professionals and will get an opportunity not just to observe the process of diagnosing
and treating health conditions, but also will be involved in taking vital signs, filling
prescriptions, interviewing patients and performing basic triage.

Stovall thanked the Southside Rotary club members for their sponsorship, and said she
looked forward to sharing her experience with other Rotaract members in the future.

Introduced by David Walker, the speaker of the day was Peter
Davidson, who is the Marina Director for Corpus Christi.

Davidson says that he has been in Corpus Christi for over 34 years.  He
came here to sell boats, but transitioned into looking after the Marina when
the opportunity opened up.

According to Davidson, Corpus Christ Marina is named number two, of the
Top-ten Marina hot spots in the United States and attracts over 800 - 1000
boats a year.

The Marina hosts a lot of events including, the Harbor lights and illuminated
boat parade, Texas International Boat show, as well as World sailing events.
Davidson also stated that the Marina attracts a lot of renowned vessels including
the Buccaneer Pirate Ship.  He stated further that the "Nina" a Columbus replica
ship, which docks in the Corpus Christi Bay is being restored.

"Corpus Christi has a beautiful waterfront, but we don't utilize it to the City's
advantage" says Davidson.  "Other cities such as San Antonio had to build theirs!"
he mused.

Davidson informed the club members that the Marina was currently expanding.
According to him, they are working to replace a 34-year-old dock with a new dock
which will cost approximately$3.3 Million.  As part of the effort to improve the Marina,
Davidson disclosed that the City has also improved boater's facilities with bathrooms
as well as sitting rooms, and offerings such amenities as televisions, free WiFi and
even blow-driers!

Currently, the Marina is home to three restaurants, Landry's, Harrison's and Joe's
Crab Shack.

Peter Davidson received a Four-Way-Test pin from President John Owen, on behalf of
the Southside Rotary Club, in appreciation for his presentation.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

An important message from President John Owen

"Southside Rotary's goal for giving to RI Annual Fund year is $11,500. Currently
we are short of our goal of $773.  At the beginning of this year, I encouraged every
member to give something to the Annual Fund - It doesn't matter what you give as
long as you give.  We now have 40 members (or two-thirds of our club) who have
given this year, which is fantastic.  For those of you who have not given so far, I want
to ask you to give.  You can use the attached forms to give directly to RI, or you can
write a check and give it to Erasmo, who will make sure your contribution is credited
to your account at RI.  In any event, we are so close to making the goal; let's see if we
can achieve it.  Please consider donating today!!

To make a donation, please go to the District Website here, or get in touch with Erasmo Nava.
