This Beautiful logo was drawn for us by Joe McInnis.
Joe was a member of Southside Rotary many years ago.
He was in a wheelchair and had almost no use of his arms or hands.
He drew the boat with his mouth and teeth.

Nigeria’s health minister, Isaac Adewole, said on Friday that his government is determined to rid the country of polio again. New cases recently landed Nigeria back on the list of countries where the disease is endemic. Adewole met with Rotary leaders at Rotary International World Headquarters in Evanston, Illinois, USA, to discuss Nigeria’s recent efforts to stem the outbreak. All three of the country’s cases were detected in the northern state of Borno, which was under the control of Boko Haram militants until recently. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the virus has been...

Even as parts of Haiti were still recovering from a catastrophic 2010 earthquake, Hurricane Matthew tore through the impoverished island country Tuesday, leaving hundreds dead and many more homeless. The Category 4 storm has affected an estimated 330,000 people in Haiti, including 6,400 who have been moved to temporary shelters. Extensive damage to main bridges and other transportation networks have left some areas cut off and vulnerable. Torrential rains have resulted in flooding and landslides. And contaminated water supplies threaten to lead to a surge in cholera cases and other waterborne...

On 1 October, RI President John F. Germ declared Samuel F. Owori Rotary International's president-nominee. The Nominating Committee for President selected Owori, a member of the Rotary Club of Kampala, Uganda, in August. He will be elected at the 2017 RI Convention in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, and will become president on 1 July 2018. Read more about Owori

Nigeria reported three cases of wild poliovirus in the northeastern state of Borno in August of this year. Following the World Health Organization's confirmation of these cases, the country returned to the list of polio-endemic countries. The other polio-endemic countries are Afghanistan and Pakistan. These are the first cases detected in the country since July 2014, and while this news is disappointing for all Rotary members, we are confident that Nigeria can defeat polio. Rotary provided $500,000 to assist immediately with the outbreak response, and an emergency response plan has been put...

[Rotary Club Invocation:

Thank you for agreeing to say the invocation for our Rotary Meeting.  The Rotary Club of
Southside Corpus Christi includes persons of many different religions, beliefs and ideals,
and we aim to respect the  religious beliefs of others, while remaining faithful to our own.
Please make your invocation a non-denominational,  inclusive one that recognizes these
religious diversities and avoid references pertinent only to a particular set of religious  beliefs.

Thank you for your cooperation and participation.]

PDG Betty Frantum shared the following quote:

"Negotiating techniques do not work all that well with kids, because in the
middle of a negotiation, they will say something completely unrelated, such
as, "You know what? I have a belly button!" and completely throw you off
guard."

Meeting Program

Meeting Program:

(Pictured below: VP David Walker)

Introduced by VP David Walker, the special
guest for the day was Dr. John Cicala

.
Dr. Cicala, will be the Executive Director at the Center for Negotiation
(CFN), at Texas A&M University, Kingsville, which is scheduled to be
launched in the Fall of this year.

Dr. Cicala is currently an Associate professor in the Department of
Management, Marketing and Information Systems.  He has taught
negotiations at the University level (both graduate and post-graduate)
since 2004, and believes that, "every student needs to know how to
negotiate".

(Pictured below: Dr. John Cicala)

AACSB International is the premier accrediting body for collegiate business
and accounting programs.  Its magazine, BizEd, recently featured an article
stating the importance of questioning as a business skill.

The college of Business Administration at Texas A&M University, Kingsville,
echoes that sentiment, with the launch of its new Center for Negotiation this
Fall.

The center will not only help educate its undergraduate and graduate students,
but anyone who wants to be better at negotiating.

The CFN is one of the only such centers in the State and one of the few in the
nation to concentrate on negotiation from a business perspective.

Dr. Cicala shared the importance of negotiation in everyday life with the Southside
Rotary club members.  He also talked about the necessity of negotiation in every
career area, and his expectations for the CFN.

(Pictured below: President Nancy Foster with Dr. Cicala)

For his presentation, Dr. John Cicala received a
"Tacks Shelter" from President Nancy Foster.

The "Tacks Shelters" are designed and made by
club member Rodney Vaughn.

(Special thanks to VP David Walker, for providing information on Dr. John Cicala)
