This Beautiful logo was drawn for us by Joe McInnis.
Joe was a member of Southside Rotary many years ago.
He was in a wheelchair and had almost no use of his arms or hands.
He drew the boat with his mouth and teeth.

In Syria, where a civil war has been raging since 2011, more than 6,000 people flee the country every day. As of September, more than 4.1 million people have become refugees, and 7.6 million more have been internally displaced. “The plight of Syria’s refugees is a litmus test for the world's compassion,” says Rotary International General Secretary John Hewko. “Rotary members worldwide are profoundly disheartened by the refugee crisis now unfolding in Syria and other parts of the world,” which the United Nations has described as the worst in decades. “Rotary is following the situation closely...

He will be formally elected at the 2016 RI Convention in Seoul, Korea, and will become president on 1 July 2017.  Read more about Riseley

Rotary and ONE, an international advocacy organization, joined other event partners in downtown Chicago on 24 September to demonstrate a commitment to ending extreme poverty and inequality and to promoting action on climate change on the eve of the United Nations launch of its Sustainable Development Goals. The 17 ambitious goals constitute a road map for finding solutions to the world’s most pressing problems, and dovetail with Rotary members’ work to create positive change in their communities and around the world. As dusk fell over Chicago, participants in the Under One Sky event held up...

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on 25 September that Nigeria is now polio-free and has been officially removed from the list of countries where polio is endemic. It’s been 14 months since any cases of polio caused by the wild virus have been detected there. With Nigeria’s historic achievement, polio remains endemic in only two countries: Afghanistan and Pakistan. That means transmission of the virus has never been stopped there. Nigeria was the last country in Africa where polio was endemic. The continent celebrated its own first full year without the disease on 11 August. Once...

[Rotary Club Invocation:

Thank you for agreeing to say the invocation for our Rotary Meeting.  The Rotary Club of
Southside Corpus Christi includes persons of many different religions, beliefs and ideals,
and we aim to respect the  religious beliefs of others, while remaining faithful to our own.
Please make your invocation a non-denominational,  inclusive one that recognizes these
religious diversities and avoid references pertinent only to a particular set of religious  beliefs.

Thank you for your cooperation and participation.]

Ty and Randy, and illustration by Ty.

On September 26th the Ramp Champs built a Ramp
for an individual named Ty (Last name withheld for
privacy reasons).  At the last meeting, the Southside
Rotary's Ramp Champs received a check for $150,
from Ty and a family member to support the efforts
of the ramp building projects. The club also received
an image of the last illustration completed by Ty before
he had a stroke, which left him committed to a wheel
chair as well as a letter of appreciation.

The letter of appreciation reads,
"Dear Southside Rotary,
We want to thank you for building Ty a ramp on
Saturday.  We so appreciate your hard work on a
weekend!

Everyone who visits says it looks great.  It fits in
with the house and we have been up and down it
several times.  Thanks to Rod, Erasmo, Don and
Scott.  Your dedication to people of the community

is a special gift.

Thanks again.

Love, Ty & Randy

(Pictured below: Sheriff Jim Kaelin)

Sheriff Jim Kaelin, introduced this week's
 speaker, Port Commissioner, Charlie Zahn.

Zahn, whose presentation was focused on describing to the Rotarians the role
he played  in reducing the cost of windstorm insurance for homeowners in the
coastal bend region (and in all of the State of Texas), by going head- to-head
against insurance companies to reform the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association
 (TWIA).

(Pictured below: Port Commissioner, Charlie Zahn)
According to Zahn, "...five members of the board of
the TWIA represented the insurance companies,
while only four members represent you and I".  This
gave the insurance companies an unfair advantage.
As a result, residents were having a difficult time
obtaining insurance at a reasonable cost.
In getting the windstorm insurance bill passed, and in
reforming the TWIA Zhan says that they were able to
arrest imminent increases in the insurance costs to
residents; and there is hope of decreased insurance
costs in the near future.  The bill will also make it possible
for private insurers to get into the windstorm insurance
market.

Further the bill forces the insurers to use a single adjuster program rather than adjusting their own
claims, this he said will increase the consistency of adjustments.

(Below, Charlie Zahn recieves a Tacks Shelter,
presented by President Michelle Maresh-Fuehrer).

In appreciation for his presentation, President, Michelle Maresh-Fueher
presented Port Commissioner, Charlie Zahn with a Tacks  Shelter.  The
Tacks shelter is  designed and built by club member, Rodney Vaughn.
