Sheriff Jim Kaelin - Did you know?
(Sheriff Jim Kaelin pictured below. Photo courtesy: Gary Blum, DDS, MS)
Sheriff Jim Kaelin - Along with a plaque and
an American flag, the astronauts of Apollo 11
left behind some 5000 pounds of cameras, tools,
and debris when they left the moon in 1969....
Think about it, if we hadn't left some garbage behind,
nobody would have believed humans had ever been
there.

Story submitted by Linnae Luehrs
(Pictured below, contestants from John Paul High School
Vanessa Falcon (left) Sherri Davis, Coach (center) and Gabriella Conklin (right).
Photo Courtesy: Gary Blum, DDS, MS)
"In case you didn't notice, I am short...." Such strong, yet candid
words, as spoken by the first contestant Vanessa Falcon, were the
words that kicked off the Four-Way-Test contest, sponsored by the
Southside Corpus Christi Rotary Club.
Falcon spoke about her experiences with being shorter than most
people. In an engaging narrative, she told the audience of her many
struggles with bullying along with dismissive messages she received
from her peers, which suggested she couldn't succeed because of
her height. She went on to talk about how she overcame these experiences, answering the
Four-Way-Test questions as she did so. Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build good
will and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
According to a post on the Four-Way-Test contest, by District 7360 of the Rotary Club, "...The
contest is designed to introduce High School Students to Rotary, by creating interest through a
competitive speech contest, sponsored by their local Rotary club"
The second contestant, Gabriella Conklin, recounted a touching story on her
grandfather's struggle with heart disease. She also talked about how he lost
this battle and what the experience meant to her. Like the first contestant,
she related her story to the Four-Way-Test.
While both contestant's essays where quite persuasive, Gabriella Conklin won
the competition with 11 points.
Gabriella who is also the Vice President of the John Paul II High School Rotary
Interact Club, stated that she is very involved in multiple school clubs and sports. She aspires to become a
pediatrician, while Falcon's goal is to become an attorney.
Gabriella Conklin received a $200 check, while Vanessa Falcon received a $100 check from President John
Owen, on behalf of the Southside Rotary Club. Both contestants as well as their coach, Sherri Davis, each
received a Four-Way-Test pin for their participation.
