Introduced by John Thurston, the week's special guest and speaker
was Major Sharon Carver.
Major Carver informed the group that the Salvation Army started in
England as a minister team determined to leave the confines of the
church and reach the needy in the streets. Founded by William Booth,
The Salvation Army was built on the policy that to reach a person's soul,
you had to make sure they were well fed and in clean clothing. This is
how they came about the maxim, Soup - Soap - Salvation.
Carver, who has been working in the ministry for over 20-years with her
husband said that said that the Salvation Army of the Coastal Bend was
proposing a new project. The project, the Center of Hope is a five-
million dollar project, which Major Carver stressed will not be a shelter, but
a transitional home. She said it will be the most significant project that the
Salvation Army has done in South Texas. The center will be focused on
keeping families intact and supporting families as well as single parents
with children, who need assistance, as they work to become self-sufficient.
She said they center will have programs that will last as long as two years.
Construction of the center should begin in the summer of 2016. The finished
project will have a long-term positive effect on the community.
For her presentation, Major Sharon Carver received a Tacks Shelter from
President Michelle Maresh-Fuehrer. Tacks Shelters are designed and
made by club member Rodney Vaughn.
