On this week's "Meet the Candidates Series" we welcomed candidates, incumbent Mayor, Nelda Martinez and Bob Jones, candidate for Mayor.
Introducing the guests, Immediate Past President, Suzanne Guggenheim touched on their backgrounds and accomplishments.  Guggenheim also moderated a brief  debate between the two candidates.

Nelda Martinez is the first Hispanic female Mayor of Corpus Christi, and was elected into office as the 53rd Mayor of Corpus Christi in November of 2012.

One of nine children, Martinez is a graduate of the University of Texas Austin.  She has built four businesses and sits on multiple boards in the state.

Her presentation was focused on her accomplishments as Mayor, including replacement of the Harbor Bridge, Insuring the future for the Port of Corpus Christi (the 5th largest port in the nation) and securing a long-term regional water supply with the anticipated completion of Mary Rhodes Pipe Line Phase II project.

Sheriff Jim Kaelin "Did you know?"

Baseball is America's pastime and has seen tis share of interesting occurrences and just plain goofy history.
That is part of the allure of baseball, to hear abotu or see weird things happen; to witness a rear feat;
or to see something that will never be duplicated.

It is why America has a love affair with baseball.  It may not be the most popular sport anymore,
but there is something about baseball that always captivates.

Did you know, debuting in 1962, Gaylord Perry (pitcher) played in an era where pitchers weren't only expected pitch but his as well.

Talking to reporters over his pitcher's inability to hit, San Francisco Giants Manager, Alvin Dark joked,
"They'll put a man o the moon before Gayord Perry hits a home run."
During a game on July 20, 1969; a mere 20 minutes after Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon,
Perry stepped up to bat and hit hsi first career home run!

Sheriff Kaelin ended this week's "Did you know" by issuing a warning.
"Be careful when you tell someone, "I'll do that when hell freezes up!"

Immediate Past President, Suzanne Guggenheim opened the event by welcoming Southside Corpus Christi Rotarians, visiting Rotarians, Rotoractors, and special guests who joined together for a live-streamed global status update, on the effort to eradicate Polio.  The World Polio Day event was held in Evanston, Illinois.

Issues such as, "Why Polio matters," "Which countries are still struggling with Polio eradication" and "Global progress in eradicating Polio" throughout the world were addressed.  The Director of Operations at AIG, also Polio survivor and Ironman triathlete, Minda Dentler, shared her moving story on obstacles she had to overcome.

Special guest speakers included, CDC Director, Dr. Tom Frieden, Senior epidemiologist at the CDC, Dr. James Alexander and  Olivier Charmeil, CEO and President at Sanofi Pasteur, the world's leading manufacturer of oral polio vaccine.   Performances were provided by celebrity ambassadors, Ziggy Marley and Tessane Chin.

Following the live-streaming, President, John Owens, and Vice President, David Walker shared their stories on living with Polio.  The session was moderated by Betty Frantum, the audience were able to ask a few questions.

David Walker stated that he had contracted Polio in 1949 at the age of two and a half years old; while Owens had contracted Polio at the age of six, in 1961.  Walker had stated that growing up, he experienced students that will make fun of his condition, while others were supportive of him.  Walker also stated that, "unlike Owens who had known what it was like to walk before he contracted the disease, I was little, I never knew what it was like to walk."

Owens stated that he was one of the last people to contract polio in the country, and while his family was very protective of him, they never let him feel different.  Owens stated that his father had told him, "You need to make it with your brains, because you can't do it with your body."

Despite the shortcomings presented by Polio, both men have attained a high level of professional success, Owens is the CEO of Goodwill, Incorporated, while Walker owns his own Architectural Firm.

The Legend of Sir George
Sir Cass began the ceremony by telling the students the legend about Sir George, who was not the brightest or strongest Knight.  Yet he was a Knight that was well liked and respected.  He traveled all over the world.  One day he came upon a village that was very dark and gray – unlike any other place he had ever seen.  This village had a Dragon.  The biggest one anyone had ever heard of.  He had huge bat-like wings, large spikey scales, massive red eyes that glowed in the dark, and teeth as long as a man’s arms.  You see, the village was dark and gray because the people were starving.  The Dragon had eaten all of their farm animals and their crops.

Sir George was going to go to where the Dragon lived to save the land.  People said, “Sir George is not strong enough.  He is not big enough. We’ve sent every warrior we’ve ever had and none of them came back.”  Sir George didn’t listen.  He went to the top of the mountain looking for the Dragon.  At the top of the mountain he saw a massive dark cave.  He suddenly realized it was very quiet.  The birds had stopped singing.  The crickets stopped chirping.  The massive Dragon came out roaring at Sir George from his cave.  Sir George charged at him with his sword.  They battled for hours and hours.  Sir George finally prevailed and got the Dragon right in the chest with his sword.  The Dragon got up and roared and then crashed down into the mud.

Sir George went back to his horse and went into his saddlebag. He took out a prized red ribbon he had. He tied the red ribbon around the Dragon’s neck and with his white horse took the dragon back to the village.  He paraded around the village with the dragon to show the town’s people that if you have these virtues in your heart and mind and live them you may do amazing things.
(Story captured by Debbie High).

Knighting Ceremony
One student from each class, Pre-K through 5th grades, were chosen by their teachers to be presented the prestigious Respect Medallion by Sir Cass for the knightly virtue of Respect.  Third grade recipients received a silver medallion and fourth graders received a gold medallion. The 5th grade recipients received the most prestigious award.  They were inducted into the Order of the Black Prince.  On one knee, they were Knighted by Sir Cass with a tap of his sword on their shoulders, he declared, “Knighted! Champion!  Member of the Gallery!”

Closing
The student recite the Rotary Four Way Test every morning and recited it with Sir Cass and their teachers of the Knightly things we think, say and do.
