It’s been more than two years since the last polio case was reported in Côte d’lvoire. Time enough for people to become complacent about immunizations. But that would be a mistake – a potentially deadly mistake.
“The public sometimes doesn’t understand why, after so many rounds of polio immunization, they are still being asked to bring their children to the immunization post,” says Marie-Irène Richmond-Ahoua, chair of Rotary’s National PolioPlus Committee in Côte d’lvoire.
As a long-time advocate for polio eradication, Richmond-Ahoua knows you can’t let up against this tenacious and crippling...

It's been nearly 75 years, but Renata Laxova remembers with heartbreaking clarity the night her mother put her on the kindertransport train to England with 100 other children.
"My mother said, 'We love you and we want you to be happy and go to school and play,' " says Laxova, who was just eight years old at the time. "She said 'You know' -- and I did -- 'everything that is going on.' "
That "everything" was the advance of Hitler's armies. They would invade Laxova's homeland, Czechoslovakia, in 1939. Laxova was one of nearly 700 children -- most of them Jewish -- who fled Prague between 13...

How heartwarming it is to induct two new vibrant members into our club.
Claudia Reyes and Adam Koll will be great assets for our Club.
Both have jumped right in, volunteering their time and talents before being even officially inducted into the Club. Claudia already signed up for two Committees. She, also, right away, submitted her proposals for three new members, trying to meet PDG Don Ratcliff challenge of offering a Paul Harris Fellowship to the first Member who would bring in three new Members. All three proposed members have now been approved by the Board, and will be submitted to the membership as soon as they have gone through the New Member Orientation Program.
Adam Koll, is now the Editor for The Riptide, So expect to read from him every week.
I hope that all our members will make an extra effort to welcome them, get to know them, and make them feel that this is their new home.
I am thrilled to see our membership grow. There is so much good we can do around us to make a difference. Old members, new members, I enjoy working with all of you. And remember, if you have a passion for something that is not being satisfied, please know that my door and telephone are always open and available to you. We may find a way... Thank you again for the opportunity to serve.

Scott Sutherland introduced today's speaker, Jim Moloney, author and local historian. Jim Moloney and Murphy Givens recently co-edited a book called Recollections of Other Days. The book is a compilation of memoirs from early settlers of Corpus Christi and the Nueces Valley of South Texas. The great value of their accounts, both written and oral, lies in the fact that they lived through the times they recalled from 1850-1930. From the time when Corpus Christi was a struggling frontier outpost in the 1850s through the time of the Civil War and beyond, Mr. Moloney shared some of the stories of the early settlers and the hard times they endured. Their legacy is the Texas we know today. Their stories are part of our history and a part of ourselves. Mr. Moloney concluded by encouraging us to interview older adults in our community so that future generations can learn from their life experiences. Many of the stories found in Recollections of Other Days are available today because Mary Bluntzer took the time to interview others and preserved her findings with the help of the Corpus Christi Public Library. Please consider continuing this practice of preserving our stories for future generations to enjoy.
And same day, we'll start bright and early at 7:00 am, setting out the flags for Veterans' Day. This is allways a fun project in conjunction with the Boy Scouts. Mark your calendars!
