Joe was a member of Southside Rotary many years ago.
He was in a wheelchair and had almost no use of his arms or hands.
He drew the boat with his mouth and teeth.

Germ unveiled the 2016-17 presidential theme, Rotary Serving Humanity, to incoming district governors on 18 January at the International Assembly in San Diego, California, USA. “I believe everyone recognizes the opportunity to serve Rotary for what it truly is: not a small opportunity, but a great one; an opportunity of a lifetime to change the world for the better,...

Rotary members and our partners in the fight to eradicate polio offer our heartfelt condolences and express a deep sadness in the wake of a horrific bomb attack in Quetta, Pakistan, that took the lives of at least 15 security personnel on 13 January. This tragic attack outside a polio immunization center is a stark reminder of the dangers faced by Rotary, our partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, and the brave women and men on the front lines of our effort to protect all children from the paralyzing effects of polio. While the bombing will be investigated, one thing is clear:...

Meeting Program
Meeting Program:

(Pictured above: John Thurston)

Rotarian John Thurston was the week's speaker.

Sharing scenic pictures of one of the world's last great
wildernesses, John introduced the Wilderness Canoe Base
of North America's Canoe Country, a pristine area located
between the United States and Canada, and a favorite
travel spot for the Boy's Scout.  John says he has been
making trips to this area since 1961.

The area which spans thousands of square miles of forest,
navigable rivers and lakes, lots of rocks and wild-life was
the perfect location for the scouts to train, have adventures
and build lots of memories.

John who brought his canoe with him, said that his canoe was built by Joe Seliga, the foremost canoe
builder in Canada.

In describing his experience as a scout, he stated that the crew-members had to be between the ages
of 14 and 18 years old.  The trainers, and leaders were older.  He experienced the camp as both a crew-
member and as a leader.

(Pictured below: John Thurston's canoe)

(Pictured above: John Thurston)

John described adventures he shared as a youth
with other crew members, and continues to share
today with his family.  He said that he intends to
continue these trips especially with his grand children.

"The goal, is to get young people to contemplate
about the world without an i-phone."  He said.

For his presentation, he received a Taks Shelter.
Taks shelters are designed and built by Rotarian,
Rodney Vaughn.
